Midtown Detroit is home to most museums and theaters.
Museums include the Detroit Institute of Arts, the Detroit Science Center, the Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Historical Museum and the Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit. A few miles west in Dearborn is also The Henry Ford, the world's largest indoor/outdoor American history attraction. A few miles north is Cranbrook, one of the world's leading centers for education, science and art.
Detroit has the second biggest theater district in the country in terms of seats. It's home to the elaborately designed Fox Theatre, the second largest theater in the country after Radio City Music Hall, as well as the world's largest Masonic Temple. Detroit also features more contemporary performances at Wayne State University's repertory theaters, or at the edgier Planet Ant Theater and Matrix Theater.
Detroit is also home to a lively music scene that extends beyond its Motown roots – from classical to rock, from techno to jazz and from garage pop to rock and roll, Detroit can give any city a run for the title of music city.
A vibrant arts and cultural sector is vital to the health and well-being of the Detroit region’s people and communities. More and more there is a realization that arts and cultural contributes to economic as well as spiritual well-being. The Cultural Alliance of Southeastern Michigan serves as the united voice of our region’s arts and cultural community.
