Moving Around the Region

The Detroit Region is an exceptional location that provides easy access to major U.S. and international markets, as well as a wealth of recreational opportunities. Detroit, the nation’s 11th largest city, is in the heart of the automobile industry as well as other vital businesses.

Nestled along the Detroit River that runs between Lake Erie and 430 square mile Lake St. Clair, the area is directly connected to the Atlantic Ocean via the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Seaway. Canada and three international border crossings are approximately 30 miles from the center of the county. Three interstate highways provide easy access throughout the U.S., Canada and Mexico.

Aerotropolis

The Aerotropolis is a bold concept embraced by Wayne and Washtenaw Counties, the local communities, and leading business executives in Michigan. The Detroit region has the elements to become a world-class aerotropolis — two major airport facilities, over 25,000 acres of developable land and supportive community leadership.

In addition, Southeast Michigan has an advantageous geographical location with ready access to a majority of the North American consumer markets, a shorter flight distance to international markets, and a developed infrastructure connecting the transportation ports. All modes of transportation (air, sea, rail and highway) can be accessed within a one-mile radius, making it an ideal location for a global logistics hub.

Waterways

The Great Lakes -- Superior, Michigan, Huron, Erie and Ontario -- and their connecting channels form the largest fresh surface water system on earth. This underappreciated resource will become increasingly important as the world grapples with the issues and implications of climate change. Covering more than 94,000 square miles and draining more than twice as much land, these freshwater seas hold an estimated 6 quadrillion gallons of water.

The channels that connect the Great Lakes are an important part of the system. The St. Clair and Detroit rivers, and Lake St. Clair between them, form an 89-mile long channel connecting Lake Huron with Lake Erie. From Lake Ontario, the water from the Great Lakes flows through the St. Lawrence River all the way to the Atlantic Ocean, about 1,000 miles away.

Even during these challenging times the Detroit region is the economic powerhouse for Michigan. Historically, it boasts the most job growth, nearly half the state’s population and is home to many corporations of all sizes.

The Detroit metropolitan area ranks 7^th in total number of business establishments nationally. New businesses are opening up every day and the time has never been better to invest in Detroit.

The Detroit region has the 8^th largest population (4.5 million) and is the 12^th wealthiest metropolitan area in the U.S. Over the past decade, more than $15 billion has been invested downtown by the private and public sectors, building two new professional sports stadiums, live theater and opera venues, gaming casinos and hotels, major new offices, residential, retail, restaurants, and nightclubs. As a result of these investments, the character of downtown Detroit and its neighborhoods has fundamentally changed and more people are moving downtown.

Today the average income in Detroit is higher than 2006 census trend projections…$59,300 versus $44,600. Of the new downtown residents, 83 percent have a college degree or better, compared with the national average of 26 percent. One-third of these new downtown residents have a master’s or other professional degree, compared with the national average of 10 percent.

Alternative Energy

Alternative energy is a natural fit for the Detroit region. The automotive industry is developing new powertrain technologies that use new fuel sources. However, alternative energy goes beyond automobiles and the Detroit region is heavily invested in developing new energy sources as well as distribution and environmental technologies. That focus includes the development of markets for such alternatives as cellulosic biofuel, wind generation, advanced batteries and solar cells.

There are more than 100 companies in the Detroit region involved in development of alternative energy technology. With its offshore capacity, Michigan is eighth in the nation for wind energy opportunities but it has barely tapped that resource. Making the Detroit region a major hub of the alternative energy industry will take strong public and private partnerships and holds great potential to grow jobs and diversify its economy. The region is home to number of organizations and businesses that are on the leading edge of alternative energy research and production in the following areas:

Southeast Michigan's leading economic development organizations work collaboratively together under the umbrella of the Economic Development Coalition of Southeast Michigan (EDCSEM). Its members include many of the same partners as the Detroit Hub: Ann Arbor SPARK, Automation Alley, Detroit Economic Growth Corporation, Detroit Regional Chamber, Detroit Regional Economic Partnership, Detroit Renaissance, Macomb County, Oakland County, NextEnergy, TechTown, Tourism Economic Development Council and Wayne County.

The coalition is not a new organization but a collaborative effort that supports the work of its partners while at the same time focuses on projects that benefit the entire region and have the opportunity to bring greater results than through individual efforts. Its areas of collaboration include:

Expanding the capacity for entrepreneurialism and innovation in the region
Identifying priorities and jointly seeking federal and state resources to advance economic development in Southeast Michigan
Partnering on policy initiatives that support economic growth in the region

Detroit and Michigan are in dire need of an industry (or two) totally unrelated to the automobile. In 2008, the state decided to take action in at least one direction by creating a film-incentive package. The package, in effect, rewards production companies that come into the state to film. It also seeks to build a movie infrastructure to jumpstart Michigan’s Movie Industry.

Access to affordable and excellent health care is an issue that communities all over the country are facing. This region is home to a number of leading and world-class health care providers as well as two schools of medicine. Multi-stakeholder organizations like the Greater Detroit Area Health Council (GDAHC) are addressing issues of health care quality, access and cost in a seven county region of southeastern Michigan that includes Macomb, Oakland and Wayne.

Under its Save Lives Save Dollars (SLSD) multi-year initiative it is pursuing coordinated, immediate and long-term actions to drive quality improvement (save lives) and derive cost reductions (save dollars) in southeastern Michigan.

Because of our history as a hub of big manufacturing, it is easy to overlook the fact this region is home to many start ups and small businesses. The entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well in Detroit and is the bright light that will lead the area to new economic growth and opportunity. Most people in Michigan including the Detroit region work for companies with 20 or fewer employees. This region has many individuals and organizations dedicated to this vital sector and able to help grow entrepreneurs and support businesses at every stage of development – from a bright idea, to a promising start-up, to building a business that creates employment growth.
