Unleashing America’s Talent: Building a Competitive Workforce for our Future

William "Bill" D. Green
Chairman & CEO
Accenture

As we emerge from the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression, we must focus on unleashing an important natural resource – the talent of America’s workforce. If we fail to act now, the opportunity for American workers to compete for jobs in a global marketplace can be lost for a generation or more. Nobody understands this imperative better than the people of Detroit.

William D. Green, Chairman & CEO of Accenture, will discuss ways business, government and educators can work together to renew our emphasis on learning and skills training and build a workforce that is prepared to compete in the new global economy.

Mr. Green represents Accenture in a number of external venues, including Business Roundtable, where he has served as chairman of its Education, Innovation and Workforce Initiative since 2008. Last year Mr. Green chaired Business Roundtable’s Springboard Project, which recommended specific actions that can be taken right now to overcome the obstacles that are holding back U.S. workers and threatening our competitiveness. Mr. Green will focus on those recommendations, which range from unlocking the power of community colleges to creating nationally recognized workforce credentials and certifications. If these recommendations can be turned into reality, southeast Michigan and the United States as a whole, will have much to gain.

Getting there won’t be easy, however. Mr. Green says it will require changing our delivery systems, and that means having the courage to reinvent our business and education models and challenge old norms. In his remarks, Mr. Green will share his perspective on why education and skills training need to become more accessible and affordable, and why all of us – business, government and educators - need to be held accountable for ensuring that we do our part to reach the goal of a more competitive U.S. workforce.
